The Zen Art Of Loose-Leash Walking

Global Pet Foods, Dec 11, 2018

Is sweet little Fido trying to launch you like a kite? Do the neighbours yell “Houston we have lift off!” as you zoom?

Yes to both?
Rest assured, you are not alone in this struggle.

For many owners, the most frustrating aspect of training is overcoming the walking tug of war. The problem is, most dogs find pulling to be very satisfying. After all, humans walk sooo slooowy and Fido has places to go with four legs to get him there.

As a certified trainer, with more than 20 years in the business, I’ve seen my fair share of owner melt downs. Many due to the frustration and despair caused by walking-related canine capers.

Our dogs are opportunists and given an inch, they will do their best imitation of Usain Bolt. But before you hang up your leash and decide to raise goldfish, come talk to the staff at your local Global Pet Foods. We have an variety of tools designed by canine behaviourists that can help. Our knowledgeable staff can help you and Fido find a specialty leash, collar, or harness to make walking more enjoyable.

Then it’s time to work. These tools will help reduce the pulling, and minimize your frustration, so you can work on training. Remember, consistency is key.

A dog at the end of a tight leash is no longer engaged with you – their focus is forward. Training, tools, and consistency will get the dog back on focus so you can redirect their energy.

The Zen art of loose-leash walking is a journey. It won’t happen overnight, but with the right tools and a great training plan, you’ll be well on your way.
